Maybe you’ve been to Muskoka, but have you really experienced it? There’s more to this iconic cottage country locale than celebrity sightings and tanning on the dock, and there’s enough variety to make it fun for the whole family.

At nearly 4,000 square kilometres, Muskoka is a big place. Luckily, the Volkswagen Tiguan’s handling and comfort make the drive from Huntsville to Gravenhurst a trip worth remembering.

Santa’s Village

When he’s not in the North Pole, Santa’s hanging out at his summer home in Bracebridge. This theme park has a bit of everything—go karting, laser tag, mini golf, and even a rollercoaster—but the main attraction is feeling the Christmas spirit in the summer heat. And unlike the pressures you feel putting those presents under the tree, this one won’t break the bank.

Float at the Inflatable Water Park

Water wings are fine, and there’s nothing wrong with a pool noodle, but this Lake Rousseau attraction takes things up a notch. Have you ever been on a multi-story slide that goes right into the lake? How about a bouncy castle on the water? Now’s your chance.

At the drive-in

Watch movies under the stars at Gravenhurst’s Drive-In movie theatre. And we mean that literally, if you opt for the Volkswagen Tiguan’s Cabin-Length Panoramic Sunroof. Replicate the real theatre sound experience with the eight speakers on the available Fender Premium Audio System for an unmatched moviegoing experience.

Travel back in time on a steamship

Party like it’s 1899 on a steamship almost as old as Canada itself, thanks to Gravenhurst’s Muskoka Steamship tours. When your tour is done, be sure to visit the affiliated discovery centre, which has family friendly learning for all ages.

Bobby Orr Hall of Fame

While he’s a Boston legend, Bobby Orr was actually raised in Parry Sound, Ontario. The Bobby Orr Hall of Fame has been open in Georgian Bay for years now, and it offers a mix of interactive activities and educational programs. It’s the perfect pit stop for hockey fans of any age.

Grab a Kawartha Dairy cone

If you’re screaming for ice cream, go straight to the source. Kawartha Dairy ice cream is a favourite all across Ontario, and while it’s based in Bobcaygeon, it’s found something of a second home in Huntsville. Grab a few scoops with the family and take a short walk down to the bay, which overlooks nearby Fairy Lake.

Trade horsepower for horseback

If you’re looking to get even closer to nature, then why not grab a saddle and take a horseback-riding tour at the Winding Fences Farm? The property is beautiful, and the horses are perfect for both seasoned equestrians and new riders alike.

See the stars

If you’re city folk through and through, the Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve will show you the stars as you’ve never seen them before. Depending on where you’re staying, the preserve might be a short drive, but getting away from cottage country light pollution is absolutely worth the mileage. Get lucky, and you might even see the northern lights. Not bad for a place that’s only a few hours outside of the Big Smoke.

Sugarbush Hill Maple Farm

If there’s anything more quintessentially Canadian than maple syrup, we haven’t heard of it. So if you’re curious about how the magic is made, look for Sugarbush Hill’s bright red roof. There, you’ll find tours that will show you how maple syrup goes from tree sap to your table, and don’t worry—we’re sure you’ll get a sample or two.
