If you’ve never seen Collingwood in the summer, you’ve never truly seen Collingwood. Famous for its Blue Mountain skiing and snowboarding hills, this Simcoe County town is so much more than a winter destination. Come for the Elvis festival in July and stay for top-notch outdoor adventures like these.
Take two wheels
Put a roof rack on the Volkswagen Tiguan so you can put your pedals to the metal on a cycle through the Niagara Escarpment. Even better, make it an official tour. With a guide, you can push yourself to the limit while getting a sense of all of the must-see hotspots in town.
See the scenic caves
The scenic caves more than live up to their name. While we wouldn’t recommend it if you’re at all claustrophobic, the trails through these hollow grounds can take you in any number of directions, from a beautiful suspension bridge that overlooks Georgian Bay to the depths of the “Refrigerator Cave,” where it’s cold enough to find snow year round. If you’re braving the trail, remember to bring hiking boots, bug spray, and a bottle of water. The Volkswagen Tiguan has ample space in the back, meaning you can also bring a cooler with some sandwiches in it to replenish after your strenuous hike.
Hike the Bruce Trail
There are more hiking opportunities in Collingwood than we can keep track of, but the 6 km trail at the Pretty River Valley Provincial Park not only lives up to its name, but also provides enough of a challenge to keep you honest. If you really want to challenge yourself, there’s also the beastly 16 km Western Circle Route.
Go stand-up paddleboarding
Head to the harbour to try your hands (and arms, and legs) at stand-up paddleboarding. Newcomers can take lessons at the Blu Wave SUP Academy, but anyone with their own board should take advantage of the Volkswagen Tiguan’s folding rear seats and head straight for the water. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, consider doing a moonlit guided tour at night.
There are ziplines, and then there’s the Thunderbird Twin Zipline. This thing runs more than 2,000 feet, drops almost 300, and with two lines side by side, you can watch your partner squirm as they hit speeds of up to 70 kph. It’s more than just a stomach churner, though—on a clear day, you’ll also get an incredible view of Georgian Bay.
If you’ve bested your local rock climbing wall, then it’s time to go legit. Grab a pair of wedgie-proof pants (because those harnesses are a little unforgiving) and take the day exploring the Niagara Escarpment. There are a few rock-climbing experiences you can have in Collingwood, but we’d recommend taking the 20-minute drive to Metcalfe Rock.
