Launched in 2016, the three-wheeled Boomer Beast claims to be the first true off-road mobility scooter on the market. Now the most popular product by the Canadian brand Daymak, it’s customized for its rider, with features such as an AWD system, a large capacity lithium battery pack, and a built-in solar panel to extend range. Using the programmable controller, users can reach speeds of up to 32 kilometres/hour off-road.
When it launched in 2001, Segway inventor Dean Kamen promised the self-balancing transportation device would “be to the car what the car was to the horse and buggy.” While the original Segway didn’t quite live up to the hype, Segway’s X2 model, designed for the toughest of terrains, suitably impresses. With deeply treaded tires, a wide base and higher ground clearance, it can even be used on sand.
In the case of this eBike, ATV doesn’t just stand for “all terrain vehicle”—it also could also stand for “all track vehicle.” That’s because although the Beast was designed and made in Canada for off-road use, it’s entirely street legal. You can even recharge your phone on the battery pack’s USB ports, while the solar panel helps to extend range.
Your children probably have an entirely different definition of “scooter.” With a weight threshold of 160 lbs, the Razor RZ200 electric scooter is built with kids in mind. Picture heavy-duty alloy wheels with 60 PSI tires built for off-roading. The high-torque electric motor allows riders to reach speeds of up to 20 km/hour for periods of up to 40 minutes.
Another hit with the kids, the ASP Scoot FTT is essentially the “fat bike” of the scooter world. The hydraulic disc brakes and balloon wheels even allow riders to pull off jumps, drifts and stunt brakes. However, these monsters are ideal for downhill riding.
Not quite a scooter, not quite a dirt bike, the gas-powered Honda Ruckus has been named by YouTubers as “the greatest off-road bike ever.” They may have been somewhat joking, since this bike was built for urban environments. However, with deep-treaded fat tires, it is capable of handling sandy and rural roads with ease.
The three-wheeled QuietKat is in a league all of its own. Built by hand in Colorado, this off-road vehicle is capable of climbing steep grades. It incorporates lean technology, which helps you to manoeuvre undulating terrain. Hydraulic disc brakes on both the front and rear wheels offer the control needed to navigate difficult terrains.
Forget dirt biking—Vespa motocross is the latest thing. Unfortunately, the Vespa Desert Racer isn’t available on the market, but we’ll let it serve as inspiration. Made in Australia for desert racing by Supacustom and Vespa Australia, this custom build was based on the 2015 Vespa Sprint 150 I.E 3. It was heavily modified, but the result is stunning and powerful.
