Did you get a new pet this year? In 2020, animal shelters saw a huge uptick in adoptions, which means many families had to pick out new names for their pups. And because the end of the year is all about making top 10 lists and recounting “best ofs,” we’re sharing the most popular dog names of 2020.
The list, released by Rover, includes old favourites that will never go out of style, but there are a few surprises new owners gave to their pandemic pups.
Before we get to the most popular dog names, we have to throw a bone to some honourable mentions:
Pet’s named after TV shows
Names inspired by the hit show Schitt’s Creek include Twyla (up 93 per cent from 2019) and Alexis (up 38 per cent).
Popular food and drink names
The name Poutine is down 15 per cent from last year, but Maple Syrup is now on the map. The name Ketchup increased by 51 per cent—could this have something to do with the Heinz vs. French’s battle? Meanwhile, Brandy earns the top spot for an alcohol-related name for dogs.
