Cats might not be the first pet you think of taking to the cottage. While the feisty felines are not above a trip to your weekend retreat, there are several considerations to keep in mind before you load Garfield into the cat carrier. One is allowing your cats outside unsupervised which is advised against due to the catastrophic effects that cats can wreak on wildlife.

Studies have shown that free-ranging domestic cats have devastating effects on wildlife, particularly birds. In the United States, it’s estimated that cats kill between 1.3 to 4 billion birds every year.
