73-year-old man punches bear in face to save pet Chihuahua

Don’t mess with a man’s Chihuahua.

A 73-year-old former U.S. Marine gave a bear a beating after he discovered it threatening his pet Chihuahua on his California property.

After hearing his beloved pet Lucy whimpering, Carl Moore went outside to see what was going on. He found a bear trying to get through a gate on his front porch – eyeing Lacy for lunch.

Rather than call Animal Services or the police, Moore acted swiftly and independently. With zero fear, Moore lunged at the bear.

“I ain’t run from nothing; I never have in my whole life and I ain’t going to start now,” Moore told CBS Sacremento. “And you’re not going to sacrifice my babies for some damn bear.”

“I raised both hands in the air and cussed at him,” Moore said.

Moore winded up and socked the bear right in the nose. Startled by the attack, the bear ran off after the hit, leaving Lacy and Moore unscathed.

John Sargent, a longtime friend of Moore’s, witnessed the entire brawl. “Carl just smacks it, I couldn’t believe it,” said Sargent to CBS. And yet knowing his friend, he wasn’t that surprised by his Moore’s actions either. “He’s an ex-first recon Marine. He’s been in barroom brawls, all kinds of stuff.”

Moore suspects the bear he knocked out is the same bruin responsible for slaughtering his pet chickens in recent weeks.

And if the bear decides to return to his property, Moore will be ready with his fists up.

“The man or beast that I run from ain’t been born, and his momma’s already dead,” Moore said.

And while this story sounds crazy, a love for a dog can overpower rational thinking. Last month, an Alberta man wrestled a cougar to save his girlfriend’s nine-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog. We’d like to think that if we were in trouble, our pooches would do everything they could to save us, too.
