Keep your buns toasty with this DIY outhouse seat warmer

outhouse seat cut out of styrofoam Photo by Liam Mogan

I will always have a soft spot for the outhouse. You take a little walk, enjoy some quiet, and keep bathroom business far from the crowded cabin. But I’m less cheery about the biffy in winter. Ever sat down on an ice-cold toilet seat? That kind of trauma stays with you.

My family has a simple, unglamorous trick for keeping the buns warm in winter. We traced out the hole of a toilet seat onto a rectangle of 2″-thick Styrofoam, cut out that hole, and use what’s left in place of the regular seat all winter long. Somehow, even at -30°C, you stay downright toasty. No more freezer-burnt buns.
