Decorate your cottage windows without sacrificing their rustic vibe

We’ve come a long way since grandma’s sheers. There are so many options for window treatments today that you don’t have to sacrifice the genuine rustic vibe when decorating your cottage windows. “The best way to achieve a rustic look is with texture and natural materials,” says Sally Morse, director of creative services for Hunter Douglas.

“Texture is hot today, and also literally,” Morse says. “Varying textures in a room can make you feel three degrees warmer. And colour we can see with our eyes, but texture draws us in to want to touch it. Today, authentic materials like wood, bamboo, and natural fibers like cotton, linen, and wool abound with a casual, nubby, knotty texture.”

Hand-woven from carefully selected grasses, bamboo, wood, and reeds, Provenance woven wood shades make a true rustic statement at the window. They come in Roman shades, roller shades and vertical draperies in a wide range of fabrics and colours to suit any type of rustic design. They’re also available with a cordless lifting system for enhanced child safety.

Wood blinds, which have been in style since the days of ancient Venice, are also a great way to achieve a rustic look.  Sustainably forested, Parkland Wood Blinds bring the outdoors in with a variety of stains and paint finishes. The new Weathered Collection offers intricate wire-brushed textures, and the Textures Collection features a new wood species, abachi, which has a unique “ticking” look for subtle texture at the window in a matte finish.

“If you’re finishing off the look with fabric side treatments, don’t go for drapes, use more informal curtains,” Morse says. “They’re typically short, and whether long or short, they’re hand-traversed.” She also recommends natural materials—cotton, linen, and wool—and avoiding fabrics with sheen, which are typically dressier.

With these tips, bringing your cottage’s rustic appeal to the windows should be easier than ever.
