For the uninitiated, a yurt is defined as a portable, bent dwelling structure traditionally used by nomads in the steppes of Central Asia. As a result, yurts are designed to be sturdy, portable, and windproof.
And now you can have one of your own. A British company called Traake has released a consumer version called the Jero. It’s constructed from marine plywood and boasts a roomy interior of 41 square feet.
The clever design is designed to fold flat, which makes it easy to move in the flatbed of a truck. Compared to a tent, the yurt isn’t exactly lightweight at 250 pounds, but thanks to its modular design, the load can be spread out across a group of hikers. Compare it to a cottage, and it’s super lightweight and portable.
It’s safe to say that hardcore campers will take a pass on the Jero, but if you plan to stay awhile and value comfort in the wilderness, this impressive little yurt is a no-brainer.
