Why the Cottage Coach is fired up to repel mosquitoes with the Thermacell E65 this season

Patio Lifestyle

Whether enjoying time by the lake or portaging through swampy sections of Algonquin in August, I don’t let anything stop me from enjoying the outdoors. But I’ll admit that the mosquitoes in cottage country have come pretty close. I’ve tried everything—from sprays and citronella candles to those weird little bug zappers—and I’ve never found a solution that ticked every box for me. But this year, things might finally be different.

I just got my hands on the new Thermacell E65 Zone Mosquito Repeller, and I can’t wait for the skeeters to start swarming. Between the sleek design and a scent-free 20-foot (6 metre) defence zone, this little unit has already earned a top spot on my “must pack” list for the summer. Here is a look into why I can’t wait to use the new E65 wherever my outdoor adventures take me this year.

Sleek, smart, and ready to go

As soon as I opened the box, I was impressed. The E65 has this kind of futuristic vibe—clean lines, a matte-meets-gloss finish, and one single button. No clutter. No fuss. Just press and go.

It came with a bit of charge already, which I loved (because who has the patience to wait when the bugs are already out?). And the packaging? Super informative, slick, and I love that it charges via USB-C. The drop-in charging dock is super convenient and charges the repeller quickly, which means I don’t have to remember to bring a specific charging cable with me. It also has a 6.5-hour battery life, which is more than enough to power through an evening on the dock, by the firepit, or out on the boat with the kids.

Design that’s ideal for the cottage

The E65 is solid. It’s compact, about the size of a hefty water bottle, but it still feels premium. I especially like the rubber-sealed charging port—it’s a thoughtful little touch that protects it from the usual cottage suspects: humidity, spilled beverages, and the occasional surprise splash.

And that magnetic charging dock? Total bonus. It clicks in with a satisfying snap and looks great sitting on a dock rail or outdoor table.

Zone defence, activated

I’ve always been a “spray and pray” kind of guy when it comes to bugs. A buddy of mine swears by Thermacell, but I’ve never tried one—until now. The E65’s 20-foot defence zone means no mess, no chemicals on my skin (or on my clothes, or on my fishing lures—a huge bonus), and it’s scent-free, which means no more covered hands while I’m tying lines or flipping burgers on the grill.

The real test: on the water

Here’s where I really want to see this unit shine: early-morning fishing. That’s prime mosquito time. Usually, I’m swatting and reapplying spray while trying to land a bass. But with the E65, I’m hoping to just power it on, set it down, and let the zone do the work.

Same goes for those buggy beach days. You finally get everyone into their bathing suits, and then—bam—mosquitoes show up like they own the place. Not this year. I’m bringing my bug-repelling secret weapon.

Bring on the bugs!

I’ve known people who avoid spending the May long weekend at the lake because of the mosquitoes. But this year? I say bring it on. I’m genuinely excited to test the E65 during peak mosquito season and see just how far that invisible shield goes.

It’s compact, easy to use, and people- and pet-friendly—not to mention sleek enough to match any patio setup. If this thing performs the way I think it will, it might just replace my candles, coils, and cans of spray.
