Bordering Algonquin Park and located at one of the highest points on the Canadian Shield, the Haliburton Highlands are known for their picturesque lakes and rivers. A winterized waterfront cottage in this popular vacation spot costs an average of $450,000, with three-season cottages sitting at around $375,000.
However, RE/MAX realtor Steve Brand says that’s about to change. He predicts that the value of cottages will increase “almost immediately” due to the extension of the 407 toll route to Highway 115/35. “My guess is that travel times will be reduced by 30-plus minutes for people driving from the west side of the GTA,” says Brand.
That’s why 481 Crego Lake Road in Kinmount, located on the edge of the county, is such a steal. Listed at $475,000, the cottage sits on the edge of a small spring-fed lake, surrounded by a 600-acre forest reserve with hiking and cross-country skiing trails. With fewer than 50 cottages surrounding Crego Lake, it boasts some of the best water quality in Haliburton.
The cottage itself is also set up for entertaining. Between the main building and the accompanying 700-square-foot “bunkie”—which is more like a second full cottage—the property can easily sleep 10 people. For cottagers searching for peace and quiet, there’s more good news.
“It’s a gem because it’s a high-power restricted lake,” explains Brand. “For buyers on such small lakes, their money can often go a lot further. For example, this cottage would easily sell in the $600,000 range if it were on a bigger, powered lake.”
