Spend a few minutes on Heritage Restorations’ website and try not to fall in love with the 200-plus barns they’ve restored. This 1840s barn, which was built in Greenville, New York, now sits lovingly restored in Brenham, Texas, about 120 kilometres northwest of Houston. The converted space is located next to a small pond on a wide, open piece of land, surrounded by lush green landscape.

The rustic cabin’s exterior still has its mid-nineteenth century charm: as the structure has maintained many traditional barn design elements, including a cupola, pent roof, barn doors with iron-strap hinges, and a gable-end hay loft door with a “bonnet” at the peak.

The interior’s design beautifully balances the old and the new, from the hand-hewn timber frame and high ceilings to the modern kitchen and open concept main floor.

The space, although only 864 square feet, seems much larger due to its well-designed layout. The main floor boasts a private bedroom and bathroom, an open concept kitchen and dining area, as well as a cozy living room. There is also a second floor bedroom loft.

Living here would almost be like travelling back in time (without giving up modern luxuries). Kevin Durkin, Heritage Restorations’ owner, said it the best: “[We] can still recall the earthy fragrance of old wood, past harvests and new mown hay, and remember the feel of its weathered timbers, worn smooth by the winds of countless winters past.”
