This giant Minnesota retreat is our new dream cabin

This home is located in Burnsville, Minnesota, and is built on the edge of a rocky slope, overlooking a gorgeous mountain range. In order to embrace the surroundings, architect Al Platt used local rocks to cover the exterior of the house. The lush landscaping around the house includes a re-circulating waterfall, a creek, and indigenous plants.

On the main floor, this great room includes a dining and living area, which is anchored by a gorgeous stone fireplace. The floors are made of hardworking reclaimed antique oak. We love the palette of rich reds, earthy browns, and warm yellows. 


The knotty chestnut cabinets make the kitchen feel rustic yet sophisticated, while the island bar is the perfect place for guests to mingle while the host cooks. The pot rack perched high above shows off decorative spoons.

Here’s another look at the kitchen, which features an oversized white apron-front sink and bright red Aga range. The skirt underneath the sink can hide cleaning products and other necessities, while the same fabric is used above in the short curtain.

This main bedroom has a gorgeous carved wood bed frame and an equally gorgeous view out the window. To continue with the palette of the main floor, the curtains, artwork and linens are all in earthy tones.

The children's bedroom looks like a cabin at sleep-away camp. The bunk beds have ladders made out of old tree limbs and are illuminated by vintage camping lights. The antique desk looks like where kids would write letters to their parents back home.

This kids’ bedroom is decidedly more airy and bright, but it’s just as cozy. The greenish-yellow wardrobe actually leads to a secret room.

This indoor-outdoor space is located just off of the great room. It has a another dining table, plus a BBQ, and a small seating area.
