Why are there setback rules for building near septic beds?

The Ontario Building Code requires that any structure be at least five metres away from the distribution pipes contained within a septic bed. This is necessary to protect the area around the bed from any activity, such as vehicular traffic or construction, that could crush the pipes or compact the bed material. Once damaged, a septic bed won’t operate properly; it can also be difficult to repair.
