The Harriman Ranch of Idaho’s Henrys Fork River is one of the best spots in the United States for fly fishing. Anglers from across the country flock there for their chance to catch one the river’s legendary trout, which are known to grow to giant proportions. So it’s not too surprising that Phil and Kate Barker, both avid anglers, decided to build their own fishing retreat at Harriman Ranch. They enlisted Blair Anderson of Hilgard Log Builders to design their dream cabin on a 20-acre property that boasts a gorgeous view of Lake Henry. During the summer months, Phil and Kate, along with their grown children, spend their time here hiking, horseback riding—and of course, fishing.

The main cabin is 2,400-square-feet and the log garage, which doubles as an office and TV room for Phil, is 800-square-feet. Phil grew up going to his grandfather’s cabin north of Toronto, which influenced his own desire to one day build his own retreat.

Inside, the cabin has gorgeous hardwood floors, log walls that match the exteriors, and vintage furniture Phil and Kate have collected over the years. (The leather sofas, however, are new since they couple wanted to make sure their guests were always comfortable). This living room is anchored by the custom-designed fireplace that was built out of 60,000 pounds of fieldstone.

The kitchen is an absolute stunner! The couple chose red as an accent colour to match the undertones of the western cedar logs. The breakfast bar counter is made of an eight-foot slab of curly redwood Phil and Kate bought on eBay, while the leather-and-wood armchairs bring a regal touch to the rustic space.

This bedroom is located on the second floor along the east side, so it gets the morning sun. The angled roof line creates a cozy nook for the bed.

In the kids room, two beds are built into a space that would have otherwise been wasted because of the harsh angle. To separate the two sleeping areas, Blair built shelves that also work as bedside tables.

After a long day of flying fishing, Phil and Kate can take a soak in this claw foot bath tub.

On buggy, summer nights, Phil and Kate can escape to this enclosed porch and watch sunsets.
