A classic A-frame gets a makeover that honours its rustic past

Originally built in 1969, the home has some distinctive features like whimsical balcony railings, glass flanking both sides of the main door, and large front patio. The cabin is actually a kit house—think Lego set, but on a much larger scale!

Inside, the living room, dining area, and kitchen are all open-concept—the ideal layout for family gatherings. The designers kept the original wall paneling, but painted the wooden beams to give the space a more contemporary feel. Originally, the staircase leading to the second floor bedrooms was covered in shag carpet—which has been removed.

The kitchen has been completely renovated. The designer had the upper cabinets removed and instead replaced them with these sleek black shelves, brought in a new stainless steel range, and integrated the refrigerator and dishwasher into the cabinetry.

This is the principal bedroom. We love the gingham headboard and the simple matching bedside tables. Although there’s isn’t much space on either side of the bed, the peaked ceilings keep the room feeling spacious.

Here is the bedroom for the homeowner’s children. The same gingham pattern from the principal bedroom is carried over here in the duvet covers. 


In many cottages, the bathrooms never get the full reno they deserve and are stuck with unsightly tile, old countertops, and cramped showers. That’s not the case with this bathroom! The designer brought in a brand new tub and toilet, and replaced hideous beige tiles with these slate ones.

With its large dining table and cozy sectional sofa, this back deck is the place for après swim cocktails and barbecues.
