A classic A-frame gets a makeover that honours its rustic past

With equally popular boating and skiing seasons, the cottages around Lake Tahoe are filled year-round with families from California and Nevada. And since the cabins are occupied year-round, they have their own unique style of architecture that’s unlike the airy beach retreats of Miami and the massive chalets of Mont Tremblant.

From the outside, this cottage feels like a classic Tahoe cabin. The interiors, however, have been modernized by Popp Littrell Architecture + Interiors. The designer had the wooden beams painted black, replaced the shag carpeting, and brought in stylish furnishings to round out the space. There are two bedrooms for the owners and their children, as well as a back deck that’s secluded by the lush forest. The cottage is the perfect place to relax after a day on either the boat or the slopes. And thanks to its small footprint, cleaning up after a weekend is a breeze.
