The incredible images of the 2024 Bird Photographer of the Year awards—including the Canadian winner!

The Bird Photographer of the Year awards are back! The 2024 crop of winners included more than 23,000 submissions from photographers all around the world, but the overall winner is from right here in Canada.

Photographer Patricia Homonylo was named Bird Photographer of the Year for her photo depicting birds that have been killed after colliding with windows. Homonylo took the photo while volunteering with the Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP). (Cottage Life readers may be familiar with FLAP’s work and the common problem of bird-window collisions in cottage country.)

“Sadly, most of the birds we find are already dead,” says Homonylo. “They are collected, and at the end of the year, we create this impactful display to honour the lives lost and increase public awareness. I hope people are shocked by what they see and are moved to act by using bird-safe glass and supporting organizations like FLAP.”

This year, the competition donated £5,000 to Birds on the Brink, which provides funding to bird conservation projects around the world.

Think you have a great bird photo that could compete with the best? Entries for the 2025 competition are now open.
