Skating along a frozen lake in Sweden sounds like a pleasant way to spend an afternoon, but for the folks in this clip, an excursion went from calm to chaotic when they found an exhausted moose thrashing in the frozen shallows.

According to Viktor Johannessen, who posted the video to YouTube, they saw the moose make several unsuccessful attempts to free itself from the ice, so they decided to chop a path back to dry land.

Getting that close to a moose takes guts—no matter how tired it is—so we’re happy these three nature lovers and their trusty axe were there to help.
