While a successful trip to the grocery store can be a rewarding experience, it doesn’t even come close to the high of finding your own food out in the wild. Foraging for edible plants is a great way to find additions to salads and other meals—and it might also benefit you if you ever find yourself lost in the woods and hungry.

Of course, it can take a highly trained eye to spot the differences between edible and non-edible plants, and mistakes can be deadly, so if possible, always forage with a guide.

Alternately, you can also test your foraging skills using our quiz—it’s risk-free! Scroll down and see how well you can identify edible plants by appearance only.
