Family of bobcats visits lucky Calgary woman

Katherine Reiffenstein got a surprise last Friday when she spotted a bobcat and bob kitten hanging outside her front door. Reiffenstein, who lives in the Haysboro area of Calgary, had been preparing to do some cleaning when she found the two on her front stoop. They were soon joined by the rest of the family.

“I saw the mother and one kitten, and all of a sudden kittens just started popping up,” Reiffenstein told the CBC.

While she was surprised to see the wildcats, Reiffenstein’s neighbours were well aware that the animals were around. The neighbourhood sits between two large parks in Calgary and, according to the CBC, bobcats have been appearing in the area for years.

Some Haysboro residents have expressed concern about the security of pets and small children, but Alberta Fish and Wildlife don’t consider bobcats a threat.

Reiffenstein did notify the police about the sighting, but she was glad she got to glimpse the young family:

“I was quite lucky to see them. I had no idea there were wildcats in the city.”
