By now you know Parks Canada has been giving away free day-use passes for the celebration of Canada 150, but did you realize how many people will be taking advantage?
With over 8 million orders seen already, and more being printed everyday, it’s no surprise that people are eagerly awaiting the summer to explore their nation’s greatest parks. While camping fees are not included in this pass, overnight reservations have skyrocketed.
Parks Canada said that their online reservations are up by 85 percent compared to last year. Maria O’Hearn, manager of external relations for Parks Canada, told CBC that equipped campsites—outfitted with tents, cooking gear, sleeping mats, etc—are reserved 380 percent more than the previous year in Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
With the influx of visitors, this national park will hire 100 extra students.
“We have jobs in interpretation, resource conservation, we have jobs in photography, videography, social media, promotions, and communications,” O’Hearn said.
The excitement is palpable as O’Hearn and staff prepare for the Victoria Day long weekend, the official start to the season.
