Which province barbecues the most? A recent study reveals how much Canadians love their grills

Summertime is grill time. At least, it is according to the 42.2 per cent of Canadians who barbecue several times a week during peak cottage season.

A May survey from Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab reveals stats about what, when, and which Canadians barbecue. The researchers surveyed 9,000 participants from across the country. The study reports some pretty striking findings about how Canadians are approaching grilling this year.

First up, most Canadians surveyed have a grill handy; 72 per cent said that they have a barbecue at home or have regular access to one. While almost half of participants barbecue multiple times a week, only 5.5 per cent barbecue every day during the summer.

Out of all the provinces, New Brunswick takes the lead at 55.6 per cent for the most barbecue activity during the summer. Close behind are Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia, with B.C. coming in last at 21.7 per cent.

The vast majority (87.1 per cent) use a gas or propane grill, or both. Charcoal grills are decently popular (18 per cent of respondents use them), while smokers and pizza ovens trail behind.

So, what are Canadians throwing on their grills?

More than half of surveyants say that rising food prices influence what they cook on the barbecue. That said, classic summer favourites—hot dogs and hamburgers—take the lead for most popular grilled foods. Beef steaks—including sirloin, ribeye, T-bone, and prime rib—come in at 29.1 per cent, closely followed by chicken. Grilled vegetables, pork ribs, pizza, and fish are less common.

Perhaps least surprising, Canadians are most motivated to barbecue by good weather and keeping their kitchens cool. With expected heat waves this summer, this could be a sign to whip out your favourite grilling equipment asap. Grill away, cottagers.
