A Vancouver police officer is getting attention on social media for all the right reasons.
On Friday afternoon Const. Peter Colenutt plunged into the icy waters of Stanley Park’s Lost Lagoon to save a dog that had fallen through the ice.
The police were called to the scene by a local resident, who saw the dog fall through after it chased a ball out onto the lagoon. By the time the officers arrived, the dog was struggling to stay above the water.
Seeing this, Colenutt removed parts of his uniform and grabbed ahold of one end of the rescue rope. With his co-workers on the other end, he slowly waded through the water toward the dog.
Bystanders captured photos of the rescue, later posting them to Twitter. In one Colenutt is making his way to shore with the rope in one hand and the dog in the other. In another, he’s crossing the snow-covered ground back to the squad car in just a short-sleeved shirt.
“The dog and our officer were both pretty chilly, but thankfully okay,” the Vancouver Police Department tweeted on Saturday.
