Police warn of cottage rental scam in Ontario

A recent cottage rental scam has created a less than relaxing scenario for would-be cottagers.

Victims of the scam found cottages to rent online, then paid either a deposit or the cost of the rental in full.

Once they arrived at their destination, they found out they were victims of fraud. The cottage either didn’t exist, or it was someone’s full-time residence and not for rent.

According to reports, the OPP has received a number of calls regarding this scam over the past few weeks, and they caution that once the scammer receives the money, it can be very difficult to recover.

To ensure that you don’t run into a situation like this, always be sure that you’re dealing with the owner of the cottage or a reputable firm that specializes in seasonal cottage renting.
