Ontario government announces new program to protect fish and wildlife

The Ontario government has recently announced a new program to maintain and restore the province’s natural eco-systems.

Known as the Land Stewardship and Habitat Restoration Program (LSHRP), it offers support to organizations hoping to undertake projects that will enhance fish and wildlife habitats.

“Conservation and habitat restoration activities will enhance Ontario’s biodiversity by protecting and improving our natural ecosystems and also support opportunities for outdoor recreation,” said Minister of Natural Resources David Orazietti. “I encourage community organizations to continue developing stewardship projects to help restore, protect and sustain Ontario’s fish and wildlife.”

Aboriginal organizations, conservation organizations, businesses, government, and non-government organizations are eligible to apply. Projects may include initiatives such as stream restoration, wetlands restoration, invasive species control, and more.

The deadline to apply to the LSHRP is midnight on Friday, May 3, 2013. For application forms or more information about the program, see the Ontario Ministry of Natural Environment’s website.
