Electric vehicle ads are heavy on twisty roads and scenic lakes, surprisingly light on panel upgrades and electrician’s estimates. No wonder new EV owners—especially ones with older electrical systems—suffer four-figure sticker shock when it’s charger installation time.
“The biggest thing is the size of your electrical service,” says Cody Gauthier, owner of Limitless Electrical Solutions in Powassan, Ont. Older 100-amp service may lack the capacity for even a mid-range charger. If you require an upgrade, “I tell people you’re not going to get one below three grand,” Gauthier says.
Dodging these costs won’t be easy. “Level 1” chargers are cheap and use a dedicated 120-volt outlet. They can top up the smaller battery in a plug-in hybrid overnight, but for a full charge in a battery-only EV, you’ll wait days.
At the other extreme, commercial “Level 3” chargers are quick enough to substantially top up your range in 20 minutes or so. But first, you have to find one near the cottage. The search should get easier thanks to the February 2026 federal pledge of an additional $1.5 billion to encourage private-sector, fast-charging networks. (The same announcement included rebates of up to $5,000 on EV purchases.)
But until there’s easy access to a fast charger near the lake, you’ll likely want the convenience of a mid-range “Level 2” charger at the cottage. Using a 240-volt circuit, like the ones for a stove or dryer, the system delivers 30–80 amps for overnight charging. Level 2 “pays for itself,” says Mike Siska. The cost of power at his Loon Lake cottage, near Thunder Bay, Ont., is less than half what he pays for a Level 3 boost at a charging station. Siska charges his Tesla Model Y using a 30-amp charger on a circuit originally intended for a hot tub. Because he already had 200-amp service, the total bill for installation was about $1,200. “I just couldn’t keep up with charging by plugging into the 120,” he says.
Could you do the same thing on 100-amp service? Maybe, says George Thompson, manager of EV infrastructure and investment with the utility company FortisBC. But first, reach out to your electrician and utility. Ask the utility for a year’s worth of meter data to suss out capacity for a lower-amperage Level 2 unit. Or consider a “load management device,” that allows the charger to share a 240-volt circuit with a dryer or other heavy load. When the dryer is switched on, the device avoids an overload by cutting the current to the charger.
Gauthier cautions this may be a false economy, given the trend towards more electrical load, including heat pumps, battery-powered boats, PWCs, quads, and motorcycles. “I’d only suggest a load-shedding device if an upgrade isn’t an option.”
Then there’s solar power, an approach that Andrew Farrell, a residential sales expert with Nova Scotia installer Solar Ascent says could make sense, especially for grid-tied systems with power to spare. By installing a Level 2 charger—Farrell likes the units from SolarEdge—you can automatically divert up to 40 amps of power to the EV whenever it’s available. When solar output is low or hydro is extra cheap, the system will charge the EV from the grid. For a cottage-sized system with up to sixteen 500-watt solar panels and a 100-amp breaker panel, Farrell suggests budgeting between $20,000 and $25,000.
Off-grid EV owners can expect to pay more, he adds, because they’ll need a 200-amp panel and a five-kilowatt battery (about $3,000) to bank surplus power. Then there are the electrical code requirements for safe battery storage: housing the power cells in either a ventilated space far from sleeping areas or a separate heated shed or garage. “If it costs too much to get a power line to the cottage, solar power might make sense,” Farrell says. “But you’re not going to see a return on your investment in a 10-year period.”
No matter how you charge up, electrical technology is poised to accelerate. “Smart” panels will make power use more efficient and load management more precise, and future EVs will act as electrical storage in an integrated system. “We’re looking forward to standardized bidirectional charging,” Farrell says, “so in a power outage you use your car to power your house.”
If there’s an EV in your future, don’t fixate solely on the sexy ad stuff: twisty roads and high performance. Get your electrician, utility, and even your local solar installer into the picture. Maybe they’re sexy too.
