The finalists from the 2024 Comedy Wildlife Awards have been announced, and they’re guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Embarrassed owlets, penguin gangs, adorable, smiling elephant seals, and nagging lionesses are just some of the scenes captured by this year’s crop of photographers from all around the world.
The competition received a record number of submissions this year—just shy of 9,000 entries from 98 countries. The winner will receive a one-week safari in Masai Mara, Kenya.
The awards were started in 2015 by co-founders and professional photographers Paul Joynson-Hicks and Tom Sullam. The goal was to bring awareness to wildlife and habitat conservation through the universal allure of humour. The competition also supports a local conservation organization each year. As in 2023, the awards are once again working with the Whitley Fund for Nature, which is a U.K.-based fundraising and grant-giving charity that helps conservation leaders in the Global South.
TV presenter Kate Humble; actor and comedian Hugh Dennis; world-renowned wildlife photographers Daisy Gilardini and Will Burrard-Lucas; wildlife expert and co-founder of The Born Free Foundation, Will Travers; Ashley Hewson, the managing director of Serif, makers of Affinity Photo; and Bella Lack, a conservationist, all return to the judges panel this year. Nikon Creators Cameron Whitnall, Lara Jackson, and Roxy Furman, plus Charlotte Kemsley, the regional director for northern Europe for Nikon, were all new additions to the panel for 2024.
Fans can have their say and vote for their favourite photo for the Peoples Choice Award. Voting is open until October 31st, and participants can enter to win a £500 prize. The winners will be announced on December 10 at an awards night in London. Following the announcement, the overall winner, category winners, and the highly commended winners will be displayed for a week at the Coin Street gallery in London.
