Craft brewery introduces topless beer can

Pennsylvania’s Sly Fox Brewing Company has become the first in North America to create a “topless” beer can.

Similar to opening a can of soup or fruit cocktail, the cans are made so that you can pull the entire top off, transforming it into a cup. And, the company has ensured that once the 360-lid is removed, you won’t come in contact with any rough edges when drinking from the can.

While we have yet to see something like this in Canada, the style has previously been introduced to Asia and Latin America, and made its debut in South Africa at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

It’s now catching the attention of craft breweries because of the enhanced aroma it’s able to create. While aluminum cans are a great way to package beer—it’s more environmentally friendly, it gets cold faster than glass, it’s able to protect beer from sun, and more—the obvious drawback is that it’s difficult for consumers to enjoy the beer’s full flavour.

“This technology allows the full flavor and aroma of the beer to hit the drinker’s senses,” Sly Fox Brewing Company head brewer, Brian O’Reilly, said in a recent release.
