Last week a quick-thinking seal managed to escape the waters of Desolation Sound, B.C, before becoming an orca whale’s lunch.
Michelle Wigmore and her husband were enjoying an afternoon on the water when they noticed a seal hanging out on the back of their dinghy.
“Sure enough, two orcas popped up,” Wigmore told Global News. “It was just breathtaking and heartbreaking in a way because you don’t want to get in the middle of a hunt and affect wildlife and affect nature. But at the same time, you feel sort of sorry for the seal, but you know that this is how these transient orcas survive.”
After the orcas appeared around the couple’s boat, they circled it, searching for the seal for about 20 minutes.
Of course they never found him, as he stayed on the dinghy until they disappeared.
“He was sitting up in our tender and he wasn’t budging. He just closed his eyes and went to sleep and would look at us every so often,” Wigmore said.
