7 secret cottage country spots to visit in honour of the Canadian Tulip Festival

When the Second World War ended in 1945, the world had much to celebrate, and the people of the Netherlands were especially jubilant. Princess Juliana and her young family were back in the country from exile in Ottawa. The Dutch sent a gift of 100,000 tulip bulbs to thank Canada for sheltering the royal family during the war, and from this heartfelt gesture, a tradition was born.

2022 marks the 70th anniversary of the Canadian Tulip Festival. Now the largest tulip event in the world, more than one million tulips will bloom in downtown Ottawa. But you don’t have to venture into the city to enjoy incredible floral displays. Communities throughout cottage country have spectacular gardens all their own. Here are some to look out for on your travels.

The festival will officially run from May 13-May 23.
