Discovering that the barbecue sauce bottle is empty may not be a 911 emergency, but it is stressful, especially if the chicken’s on the grill and the waiting room is full of hungry patients.

Here are some easy ways to doctor the condiments you do have in the cupboard. Just stir the ingredients together in a saucepan, simmer for a few minutes, and brush onto dinner near the end of grilling time. The prognosis? A full recovery.

Basic barbecue sauce

1/2 cup ketchup (125 ml)

1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce (125 ml)

1/2 cup brown sugar (125 ml)

Honey garlic sauce

1/2 cup ketchup (125 ml)

1/2 cup honey (125 ml)

2 tbsp soy sauce (30 ml)

2 cloves garlic, crushed

Carolina mustard sauce

1/2 cup yellow mustard (125 ml)

1/4 cup honey (60 ml) 2 tbsp ketchup (30 ml)

2 tbsp cider vinegar (30 ml)

2 tsp Worcestershire sauce (10 ml)
