Magnificent makeover turns RV into the perfect home away from home

After ditching most of their possessions, Lacy and Cliff bought a 1994 Safari Continental in pursuit of creating their dream home on wheels. In an interview with Design Sponge, Lacy said that the couple found mould when they were stripping the original wallpaper, and this is what prompted them to gut the entire vehicle.

They replaced the ceiling with bead board, put in new walls, and went with versatile and long-lasting cork floors.

All of the furniture was replaced and the couple used a built-in bookshelf and bench for simple, cozy storage. Sheer shower curtains were added to divide the "Captain's area" from the "living area" and provide privacy when parked at night, yet still allow natural light from the large front windows during the day.

All the old, grungy cabinetry and hardware was replaced and painted, giving the illusion of a large, live-in kitchen complete with tiny appliances and a small backsplash. A new sink, faucet, and countertop were also introduced.

The couple created a warm and cozy atmosphere in a matter of months, which can be seen from this shot of the kitchen and living room, which look nothing like the inside of an RV.

Lacy's friend and interior designer helped plan the bedroom space. They managed to fold and squish a California King Bed inside, and used reclaimed wood to create a makeshift headboard out of the back wall.

Even the smallest spaces need art. Taking advantage of all the hidden storage you can doesn't mean sacrificing personal taste, Lacy told Design Sponge. With virtually no other free wall space in the mobile home, this wall was saved exclusively for the purpose of creating a gallery wall.

The couple says the bathroom is a work-in-progress, but this space is already way better than what was here before. Lacy and Cliff found a tiny sink that they were able to fashion a skirt around and house a laundry hamper underneath.
