Are you using the right fastener for the job?

When assembling the framing members for, say, a new deck or set of stairs, it’s important that you do not use screws to fasten the pieces. Screws do not have the sheer strength to support the load and, over time, can snap. Use nails or (more expensive) bolts to secure these vital components.

When fastening deck boards, on the other hand, you can use screws. If the boards are pressure-treated, make sure that you use screws rated for use with alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ) wood. Look for an ACQ label on the package. Alternatively, you can use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel nails. Many composite deck boards are attached with specialty fasteners that are hidden below the surface.

Everyone knows that metal and water shouldn’t mix. But with docks, that’s pretty much impossible. You’ll want to use marine-grade hardware that is either galvanized or (more expensive) stainless steel.

If you’re making your own furniture for the cottage, you might want to consider using brass screws for a more refined finish.

Savvy DIYers know that the square-head screws and drivers are called Robertsons. They may not know that they were invented by a Canadian, Peter Lymburner Robertson. You should use his eponymous product whenever you can. Not just to be patriotic, but because the design minimizes “cam out,” meaning your driver won’t pop out of the screw head while you’re turning it.
