What systems are available to set up a cottage’s own supply of petroleum? What regulations apply?

To arrange for your own supply, go to a petroleum contractor licensed by Ontario’s Technical Standards & Safety Authority (any fuel supplier can put you in touch with a contractor), who would install your tank in compliance with the Liquid Fuels Handling Code, the governing legislation that protects the surrounding groundwater, lake water, and soil.

Remember: If you leave gas in an unattended tank for more than six months, the code requires that it be locked and gauged monthly to check for leakage, so it may be easiest to drain the tank before closing up.
