The double doors are a dead giveaway—this barn home used to be a two-car garage. It also used to contain two horse stalls. As you can see by the angled gambrel roof structure and charming country décor, it was the barn that served as inspiration during the renovation.

The restructuring took place to produce the perfect space for quiet musings and stimulating creation. As a writer’s retreat, the space needed ample sunlight, so there are plenty of oversized windows and crisp, whitewashed walls. The arched ceilings provide room to breathe and the fireplace adds warmth to the space.

This one bedroom cabin has everything a couple could need on a weekend getaway, including a full kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living space. The kitchen is the centre of the design and shares an open-concept space with the living room. The restructuring also created storage space and even downstairs parking.

Off the kitchen is a sliding barn door that leads to a small sitting room that doubles as a guest room. To ensure the revamp was sustainable, much of the wood was reclaimed; the floors are made from repurposed barn lumber and the trim is made from Hudson River driftwood.

The large windows also provide stunning views of the secluded surroundings. The large doors, framing, trim, siding, roof overhangs, and exterior crowning cupola are all enhanced versions of the original structure.

Modern elements were also added to the historic design. Brand new plumbing, light fixtures, windows, appliances, and wiring were incorporated during the facelift to ensure the home would be functional and convenient. Small details, such as the claw foot tub, are perfect examples of how old and new blend seamlessly in this space.
