Slippery squirrel thwarted from raiding bird feeder

Squirrels can prove quite the backyard nuisance, helping themselves to vegetable gardens and making off with seed intended for birds. A quick search will yield dozens of squirrel-proof bird feeders to confound these acrobatic rodents, but they always seem to adapt.

In an attempt to thwart a particularly troublesome squirrel, user Robert Krampf’s wife Nancy suspended the feeder platform from a narrow pole slathered in a small amount of non-toxic Vaseline. Undaunted, the squirrel rises to the challenge, comically sliding down the pole like a miniature firefighter. It is an impressive display of strength, as the animal is able to get pretty high up the pole before the forces of gravity step in.

Unfortunately for the squirrel, even an iron will and refusal to quit are not enough to overcome the feeder’s defenses. Which is an impressive feat, considering that squirrels are capable of powering through a veritable gauntlet to get a tasty treat.

In the user comments, Krampf notes that the squirrel is alive and well, and still regularly raids their other two feeders. Looks like it’s time to invest in some more Vaseline.
