Humpback whale blows rainbows as it emerges from the ocean

As if there wasn’t enough to admire about humpback whales, we’ve got one more thing to add to the list.

With such huge lungs, a lot of vapour and air is sprayed out of a whale’s blowhole when they come up for a breather, creating perfect conditions for a rainbow.

And that’s exactly what happened off the coast of Newport Beach, California. Photographer Mark Girardeau captured this colourful display with an aerial camera he was using while aboard a boat earlier this July.

Just as you might see after a sun shower, or even when using a sprinkler in your backyard, when the sun hits the tiny particles of water in the air, it refracts the white light into component colours and creates a rainbow.

Just another one of nature’s miracles!
