Water is a familiar yet mysterious substance, which become evident as it starts to freeze. Unlike other liquids, which become more dense and heavy as they freeze, water expands, forming into crystals, which actually allows ice to float where another frozen liquid would sink.
This is a handy feature, as it means that even during North American winters lakes will never completely freeze, only building up a thick layer of ice on top so that fish and other aquatic life can survive. This crystalline structure is also what makes snowflakes so beautiful, and as you’ll see with the gallery below, can even turn cars into gorgeous works of art.
