When a group of friends set out to build their dream cabin in rural Upstate New York, they decided to go heavy on the inspiration. The result was a tumblr collection of more than 12,000 hand-built cabins, lovingly crafted by people who sought to forge an individual path and do things their own way.
The best of these profiles have now been compiled in the lovely (and cheekily named) Cabin Porn. In addition to serving as an ideal coffee-table book for lovers of cottages, cabins, and all things peaceful and remote, it’s also a handy how-to guide with chapters like “How to Convert a Grain Silo,” “How to Make Maple Syrup,” and “How to Live 30 Feet in the Air.”
Even if you never plan to wander into the woods and build a cabin, you’ll likely be moved by the portraits of people who have, and the amazing places they’ve built. And as for the friends who compiled them, their inspiration led to Beaver Brook, a 55-acre woodland preserve that functions as a community, retreat, and cabin-building school.
