Alberta wildlife official rescues moose calf from barbed wire fence

Published: May 2, 2014 · Updated: March 19, 2018

The uniformed official in this video hefts his rifle and fires a round before approaching a moose calf, tangled in a barbed wire fence.

Thankfully, the shot is harmless—only meant to discourage a possibly nearby mother from attacking during a rescue attempt.

While the poor calf cries out in pain and panic, a pair of wire clippers are used to set it free. And while the scared youngster has acquired a bit of a limp, it will live to see another winter.

Thanks to Canadian TV series “Let’s Go Outdoors, with Michael Short” for this rare footage, and of course, Alberta’s dedicated wildlife staff for stepping in to save the day.

If you ever encounter a similar situation in the wild, your best bet is to contact local Fish and Wildlife officials who are trained to handle these situations.
