Sparklers are a great firework to start the night off with. They are a little more tame and lack the pyrotechnic pizzazz of other fireworks, but this makes them the best choice for kids. They burn quickly, throwing off colourful sparks when lit, and are great for tracing names or pictures in the air. If you're worried about your kid running around with a burning-hot, metal stick, give the morning glory sparklers a try. They're made from paper and tend to be a bit safer.
Firecrackers are all about the noise. Originally invented in China, their sharp "bangs" were believed to scare off evil spirits. Although they're not the most visually stunning firework, it's awfully exciting to watch the spark set off a long row. Firecrackers can come in rows of 12 to 10,000. Just keep your fingers clear.
With school done for the summer, nothing would delight kids more than watching a school house burn. A real school house would be a felony, so maybe just stick to the the school-house-shaped novelty firework. On the other hand, if you revere the hallowed halls of education, don't worry, novelty fireworks come in all different designs, including cakes, tanks, and chicken. the novelty fireworks emit small patterns of sparks, often ending with a loud firecracker bang.
Roman candles give off a pretty spectacular light show, shooting colourful balls into the night sky. The types of explosions differ, some crackling and flashing, but no matter what, they'll keep a crowd entertained. You are able to hold roman candles, but we don't recommend it. Better to plant them in a solid base and make sure they are pointed away from spectators.
