Sometimes you have to break things down before you can create something beautiful. So, get out your hammer and some salt, it’s time to distress! Create your own rustic-looking Mason jar hanging lanterns in a few simple steps.

• Cut 3 pieces of pine 1×3 to create your backboard.

• Distress and stain as desired. Remove any exterior coating on your metal hardware by letting it sit in a mixture of salt and vinegar overnight.

• Dry, and continue the rusting process by adding peroxide to salt. We spray-painted our tin lid brown and decorated the jars with lights and flowers.
