If there’s one thing cottagers know about, it’s the all-Canadian goodness of a well-made butter tart. One of cottage country’s favourite bakeries is coming to the Fall Cottage Life Show, November 1 to 3 at the International Centre in Toronto. Algonquin Gourmet Butter Tarts from Maynooth, Ontario, is bringing their famous tarts to the city. Stop by and say hello to Carolyn and taste her secret family butter tart recipe.
It’s quite a long history behind this particular butter tart. The recipe comes from Carolyn’s great-grandmother. Carolyn has operated Algonquin Gourmet Butter Tarts in Maynooth, her great-grandmother’s birthplace, for the past five seasons.
The recipe is all in the family, as Carolyn’s second cousin Kim, who owns Coffee Junctions in Coboconk near Fenelon Falls, started baking this summer. The family recipe, however, is kept top secret. The tarts are made by Carolyn in Maynooth and frozen unbaked. They are then shipped to Coboconk and baked there, keeping the tarts tasting exactly the same in both shops. The recipe has always been passed down to the family member most interested in baking in each generation. And Carolyn has no plans to pass that secret recipe on to Kim until she retires!
