Deer spotted munching on human remains in Texas

At the Forensic Anthropology Research Facility in San Marcos, Texas, leaving corpses outside to rot is a tool for research. Though gruesome, forensic scientists are able to gather valuable information from donated human bodies about the decomposition process and determining time of death.

In July 2014, a corpse was left in a forested area outside of the facility, with the intention of researching the scavengers who paid a visit. With a trail cam set up and months gone by, the scientists were shocked to see a vegetarian visitor.

A white-tailed deer was captured on camera on January 5, 2015 with a rib bone in its mouth. A couple days later, another image appeared, though if it was a new deer or the same deer returning to the scene is unclear. Popular Science comically describes the deer having “another rib sticking out of its mouth like a cigar.” In the report published on May 2, 2017, researchers have recorded the first documented evidence of a deer eating human remains.
