Beer-can boats make a splash in Darwin

As much as we love our beer, empty beer cans floating in a lake is one of the last things most Canadians would want to see. But that doesn’t hold true for Australia, where the annual Darwin Beer Can Regatta was recently held at Mindi Beach.

The event brings together amateur boat builders, who fashion floatation devices out of beer cans, most of which the competitors themselves have proudly emptied.

The goal of the race is to stay afloat long enough to reach the finish line, and proceeds go to various charity projects of the Lions Club of Darwin.

Would you participate in a beer can regatta at your lake? And more importantly, would you have enough cans left over from the long weekend to build your own?
