Update on our golden retriever puppy
Tuesdays with Mitch: I need ideas for house-training our new cottage dog
Mitch, our 13-week-old golden retriever puppy, has brought me to my knees. Did I mention that my new favourite product is a powdered rug cleaner that has been advertised recently on TV? No matter what we do, Mitch seems oblivious to the idea that doing his business in the house is “not on.” And so there I am, scrubbing the powder into the stains on the carpet. This wasn’t a problem with our last two golden retrievers. Has anyone got any tips for house-training a puppy?
For the next two weeks, though, Mitch will be on vacation. I will miss him, but it is nice to have a break. Mitch is one good-natured, rambunctious, affectionate—little puppy. We wouldn’t have it any other way. Still, dogs can be a bit like children: We love them, but we’re happy when the grandparents offer to take them for the weekend.
DH and I have a lot going on right now, including a couple of out-of-town trips. So Mitch has gone off to visit our friends (and cottage neighbours) Barbara and John, who live on a country property near Collingwood. They also have a smart, young black Labrador retriever named Joey who, I hope, will teach Mitch a thing or two (one thing or two in particular!). On Saturday, DH, Mitch, Barb, John, and Joey went for a big walk in the bush. Every once in a while, little Mitch got plain tuckered out, and someone had to pick him up and carry him for a bit. A few minutes later, though, he’d be wriggling to get down and would strike off on his own again. At night, he and Joey curled up side-by-side. We’re pretty sure our exhausted puppy saw DH leave, but we’re also sure that he’s having so much fun he’s not going to miss us much.
Meanwhile, I hope you will share your puppy stories, and your puppy advice, in the comments below. Watch for another Tuesdays with Mitch update next week.
