Tuesdays with Mitch: I need ideas for house-training our new cottage dog

Mitch, our 13-week-old golden retriever puppy, has brought me to my knees. Did I mention that my new favourite product is a powdered rug cleaner that has been advertised recently on TV? No matter what we do, Mitch seems oblivious to the idea that doing his business in the house is “not on.” And so there I am, scrubbing the powder into the stains on the carpet. This wasn’t a problem with our last two golden retrievers. Has anyone got any tips for house-training a puppy?

For the next two weeks, though, Mitch will be on vacation. I will miss him, but it is nice to have a break. Mitch is one good-natured, rambunctious, affectionate—little puppy. We wouldn’t have it any other way. Still, dogs can be a bit like children: We love them, but we’re happy when the grandparents offer to take them for the weekend.

DH and I have  a lot going on right now, including a couple of out-of-town trips. So Mitch has gone off to visit our friends (and cottage neighbours) Barbara and John, who live on a country property near Collingwood. They also have a smart, young black Labrador retriever named Joey who, I hope, will teach Mitch a thing or two (one thing or two in particular!). On Saturday, DH, Mitch, Barb, John, and Joey went for a big walk in the bush. Every once in a while, little Mitch got plain tuckered out, and someone had to pick him up and carry him for a bit. A few minutes later, though, he’d be wriggling to get down and would strike off on his own again. At night, he and Joey curled up side-by-side. We’re pretty sure our exhausted puppy saw DH leave, but we’re also sure that he’s having so much fun he’s not going to miss us much.

Meanwhile, I hope you will share your puppy stories, and your puppy advice, in the comments below. Watch for another Tuesdays with Mitch update next week.

That is such a great idea! Thanks for the tip. I'm going to try hanging the bells when Mitch returns from his “vacation.”

One other thing that I forgot, we hung a set of bells on the back door knob. Every time we took him out we jingled the bells. After a couple of weeks he began to hit the bells with his nose to let us know he needed out. We have one set at home and one at the cottage. He is over two and still uses the bells to let us know when its time to go out. This really beats barking or scratching at the door.

I think puppies just have small bladders!

Don't worry he really will get it. Regular trips outside has always worked for my Goldens. My most recent male took at least a year before I could really trust him in the house without regular trips outside. He is now at 2 1/2 and has a rotten habit of barking at the door 2 min after I have settled into a chair. Sometimes it's for a squat and other times just to check the stars or smell the roses. However, we love him so whatever it takes to keep him happy.

Thanks! I hadn't heard of the Spot Bot, but I will check it out. We take Mitch out frequently. Sometime, we'll just get back inside and he'll squat and… It seems like he has outside and inside backwards! Just before he went on vacation, though, we noticed he was starting to "get it".

Mitch is just adorable. Aside from taking him out every hour, my best advice is to get a Spot Bot compact carpet cleaner. They are often on sale at CT or Walmart. Ours has paid for itself several times over, well past the puppy stage, cleaning vomit, dirt from muddy paws and even blood from a cracked paw pad. Good luck!
