2011 photo contest winners

Nelson Charmichael has spent many evenings like this one, taking photos of his son Noah while hanging out on Chubie’s Dock—named after Nelson’s late father—at their cottage on Bala Bay, Ont. What made this photo stand out for Nelson was “the sense of anticipation, especially with the dog behind Noah, waiting for him to jump.”

Nelson seems aware of the delicacy of the scene and all the details that make this photo superb—his son’s hand gesture, the dog, the ripples in the water. You sense a moment beyond what you’re seeing, and the sepia tone gives it a nostalgic feel. It’s a very seductive image, one you can spend a lot of time with.
