2011 photo contest winners

One evening on Tyee Lake, BC, 14-year-old Taylor Dotto was sitting on her cottage dock when she noticed a cloud shaped like half of a heart. “When my friends and I take pictures together, we always make hearts with our hands,” she says. That’s what gave her the idea to lend her hand to this photograph.

Judges' comments

The idea behind this photo is simple, but so well executed. It can be difficult to photograph clouds since it’s unlikely other people will see the same shape you’re seeing, and that’s where the hand helps. This also shows great composition. Having the whole hand in the frame would have really weighed down the photo.
