Every Thanksgiving, Cameron Lawrence, 15, and his father hike near their cottage on Wolf Lake, outside Apsley, Ont. They’re always turning over rocks along the way, searching for something to photograph or even sketch. “I guess the snake was a little angry at me for disturbing it,” Cameron says. Still, he moved close, switched his camera to the macro setting, and “got it at the perfect moment.”
The open mouth really helps this photo; it gives the snake some personality. There is also a bit of a smirk. But the main focus is on its eye, which works for a couple of reasons: In pictures with shallow depth of field, like this one, eyes are a quick point of contact for the viewer. Also, people are naturally drawn to them. We were certainly attracted to this little snake’s eye.
