How about those Canadians, eh? I loved the energy of the junior team, their big heart, their skill, their unbelievable turnaround goals…

Who doesn’t want to celebrate that burst of spirit and accomplishment—a bright spot to start off the year.

Did you see the ad featuring Sidney Crosby and the Timbits minor hockey team? His bus gets held up on the side of a highway on a winter night and he (improbably, but who cares) sees a children’s hockey game happening on a pond nearby. Of course, the Canadian hero (ya, I know, not so heroic recently, but who cares) gets off the bus and joins in the game with the little kids.

I’m a sucker for this kind of stuff.

Hockey and Canadian lakes go together like Tim Hortons and the cottage drive. All over cottage country, we’ll soon be shoveling off the ice near our shorelines and trading boots for skates. This is also the start of the season’s fabulous charity pond hockey games—like the Canadian National Pond Hockey Tournament at Deerhurst Resort on Peninsula Lake, near Huntsville, which raises funds for Shoot for a Cure, or the Annual Edith Casaletto Memorial Pond Hockey Tournament, at Rocky’s Lake Wanapitei, supporting the Ontario March of Dimes.

Do any of you have stories about playing in a pond hockey tournament? Did anybody make an outdoor skating rink on the lake or in the backyard over the holidays?

@Sharon - great to have this list Sharon. Means I can blog about it to cottage renters and get them interested in travelling to cottage country in the winter. I'll include a link to the list!

Penny Good day, I see my good friend Joe is taking good care of us, by introducing our Pond Hockey Tournament. Yes, this will be our First Annual ! 2009 Long Beach POND HOCKEY Tournament, with proceeds going to the Trish's Wish Foundation / for CANCER ! The Tournament, as it is our first one will be lean ! We need all the local financial assistance we can get, as we are a non-profit outing. My sports background is coaching hockey in Port Credit, mississauga. So what better to spike up the winter blues, than an old fashion Pond Hockey Game. The tournament will be played on a shallow bay, down Long Beach Road, in Cameron Ontario ( Hwy # 35 ). The tournament is $120 for a six player team to enter, this will give each player a comemerative T-Shirt and the rest of the registration fee goes to the fund. We will start with Eight team, 4 on 4 hockey format, no goalies, non-contact hockey, no slap shots or raising the puck. the Nets are Four Feet wide by 4 inches high. The games are 30 mins long, pure skating, passing. Each team will play 4 games, plus the final. We still have room for some teams. Cheers........
